What you will learn
- The one job a lead magnet has, and the jobs it should not have
- How to choose a promise small enough to keep in one sitting
- Why a free thing that solves everything attracts nobody
A lead magnet has one job: to produce a result the reader can notice today, so that the next email you send is welcome. It is not a preview of your paid product, not a summary of your expertise, and not a gift for the sake of collecting addresses. Those attract downloads and produce an empty list - people who took the file and never open anything again.
The test is whether the reader can finish it and notice a change. A checklist used once changes something. A 60-page guide is downloaded and forgotten, and it also sets an expectation that your paid products are similarly heavy. So choose the smallest thing that produces a real result: one template that removes a tedious step, one checklist that prevents a specific mistake, one short walkthrough of a task they have been avoiding.
Decide what the free thing must lead to. If your paid product teaches a method, the magnet should complete one step of that method so the reader experiences your approach and wants the rest. If you sell a service, the magnet should produce the first diagnostic the reader needs - and make clear what happens next. The magnet is the first transaction in a relationship, so its content decides what the relationship is about.
Be suspicious of anything that takes more than a day to build. Long production is usually a sign that the promise is too broad. Split it: the first part becomes the free magnet, the rest becomes the paid product, and both get clearer. This also means the magnet and the product share material, which makes the follow-up sequence natural rather than forced.
Finally, write the exchange as a sentence before you build anything: give me your email and I will give you X, which you can use to achieve Y today. If you cannot fill in X and Y concretely, you are not ready to build - and no amount of design work will fix a promise that is not specific.
Action step
Write the exchange sentence with a concrete X and Y, choose the smallest format that delivers Y in one sitting, and write down which step of your paid product the magnet completes. Then set a one-day production limit.
